Book Review: The Orphan, The Widow & Me

Few stories have as much potential to change the way we live as those where God redeems deep heartache for His glorious, eternal purposes. Such is the case with JT Olson’s The Orphan, the Widow & Me. When 12-year-old JT became an orphan after a horrific accident, he couldn’t possibly have understood what God had in store–how the God he did not yet know planned to redeem every bit of the hurt, grief, confusion, and loneliness to impact thousands of families, children, and widows for generations to come. But that’s often how God chooses to work–in the details we don’t fully comprehend. As The Orphan, the Widow & Me demonstrates clearly page after riveting page, often God delights to draw the straightest lines from our deepest griefs to our greatest opportunities. As JT grew, so too did his heart for the vulnerable. His own journey of adopting his daughter, Grace, in China gave him deeper insight into the emotional and financial hurdles … Continue reading

One Thought that Gripped Our Hearts | Family Friday

When we began the process to adopt, we were overwhelmed at the thought of the cost (to say the least!) … A good friend of ours, who is also an adoptive father, said that when he was adopting he had this thought: “I have a daughter in China and I MUST get her no matter what. If someone kidnapped any of my children and demanded a huge ransom, I would sell everything and do whatever it took to ransom their freedom. Be prepared for this mindset to grip you.” That thought alone gripped our hearts the moment we heard it. We stepped forward with trepidation, prayerfully asking God to provide and affirm our choice to adopt. And wow was He more than faithful! When we did our Both Hands project, it was the most amazing experience to see so many of our friends and family come alongside us in support. … Continue reading

From Our Family to Yours: A Word to the Undecided

In Chad and Kelly’s words– God had a plan for our sweet son all along. We began communicating with our birth mom in August and were able to be with her in the hospital for the birth. We’ve continued communication through a dedicated Facebook page for our son. She enjoys the updates and pictures, and it gives her reassurance that he is in a loving and happy home. I was so apprehensive when we started this journey about having any contact with the birth mom (or dad or both). I’m so glad God changed our hearts. We have so much information to share with Bohdi as he grows, and he will be able to feel a sense of belonging not only to us but to his birth parents. They love him and wanted the best for him, and I’m so thankful we had the time we did to communicate and share with … Continue reading

And Yes, ALL These Kids Are Mine | Family Friday

Lifesong has been by our side through two adoption processes/four adoptions! In 2013, we embarked on our journey to bring home two children with special needs from China, and Lifesong provided us with an interest-free loan. Several months after those children were home in 2014, we began the process to adopt two 9-year-old girls, also from China. Lifesong was a “life-line” as they partnered with Orphan Care Alliance to give us a matching grant. We were also thrilled to participate in our first Both Hands project! What an amazing provision by God! Physically and emotionally, He has sustained us through difficult times. We have one child who doesn’t yet comprehend genuine attachment. He was moved four times during his first four years of life, and had many caretakers come and go. God gives us strength to work through the hardest of times. One of our daughters who came home at age … Continue reading

We Chose to Trust God {Family Friday}

In the spring of 2012, Tara and I responded to God’s Word in James 1:27: “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”  I had great apprehension about a $45,000 adoption journey. Beyond the expense of much time, energy, and emotion, we chose to also trust God for the financial resources.  Besides, wealth is a value of the world whereas obedience and redemption have everlasting value.  While the journey stretched over two and a half years, a look back at specific occasions reveals God’s provision and blessing. Six months into the process, Tara and I were discussing the $5,000 payment due in order to proceed. We had already applied for many grants, and I became discouraged with the immense costs still ahead of us, so we prayed … Continue reading

It wasn’t in our plans…but it was God’s plan!

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord.
 “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8-9 Never in a million years would we have imagined we’d be back on the paperwork trail planning to head back to China six months after completing our first adoption, but it was happening. Never in a million years would we have imagined ourselves the parents of two beautiful girls who will be amputees. This was certainly not what we had planned our life to look like, but apparently God had other plans (and they are pretty amazing!)… On Tuesday, February 4th, 2014 we were glancing through our adoption agency’s most recent report from the China team. Included in this report were some children listed for the first time by our … Continue reading

Now Our Family is Complete! {Family Friday}

Not feeling peaceful about their family being complete, Matthew & Jeannie stepped out in faith to pursue the adoption of two siblings. Read along in this week’s Family Friday to hear how God blessed and grew them through their times of waiting and uncertainty… We originally planned to adopt an infant from the US like we had with our son.  During the wait God opened our hearts up to adopting multiple children that are older.  We had no idea what our adoption would look like but went ahead and did fundraising to cover the cost of whatever God presented us with.  We got a call about Anthony and Arianna on a Tuesday, met birth mom on Wednesday, and brought Arianna home Friday and Anthony home Monday.  It was a whirlwind of a week.  We had no idea when we brought them home how much waiting and wondering was going to … Continue reading
